Class 8 Sales Still Defy Expectations
Class 8 truck sales went up again in March, staying above 1999’s pace, despite projections the truck market would drop off this year.
Peter M. Toja of Economic Planning Associates in Smithtown, N.Y., said the fact that manufacturers’ backlogs have fallen in the last six months is an indication that sales will be down over the course of 2000.
“When you’re looking at 262,000, that’s a hard act to follow,” he said in forecasting that 210,000 Class 8 trucks would be purchased in the United States in 2001.

In 1999, 262,000 Class 8 trucks were sold. For this year Toja projects sales of 222,000, and said that is not that much of a drop.
