Coalition Formed to Improve Efficiency of West Coast Ports

A newly formed group with ties to the trucking industry wants government and the trade community to work together to make West Coast seaports more efficient and technologically up-to-date.

The West Coast Waterfront Coalition unites the voices of the import-export, transportation and manufacturing sectors. The group will monitor port conditions that affect manufacturers, retailers, truckers and others, and lobby state and federal government agencies for changes, said to Robin Lanier, executive director of the coalition.

“Too often, the major players in the supply chain have not communicated well and that failure has affected everyone,” Lanier said.

According to WCWC, congestion, aging infrastructure and lack of technology are the main causes of delays at ports, driving up inventory costs, disrupting just-in-time deliveries and creating pollution as trucks get caught waiting in long lines.
