Comdata Agrees to Settle FTC Antitrust Complaint

Comdata, the leader in the trucking fuel-card business, has settled a complaint by the Federal Trade Commission by agreeing to license its card-processing system to its competitors.

The proposed settlement ensures that the company’s acquisitions of NTS Corp. and Trendar Corp. will not give Comdata the power to close other fleet-card and point-of-sale-equipment providers out of the market, reported the FTC, which noted that Comdata is five times larger than its nearest competitor.

Comdata said the agreement will have no impact on its business.

Comdata purchased Trendar in March 1995, and NTS in January 1998. Soon afterward, FTC initiated an inquiry into possible anti-trust violations.
