Congress Urges Mexican Crackdown

Congress is prodding the Department of Transportation to crack down on Mexican motor carriers operating illegally in the United States.

The House passed legislation Oct. 14 increasing penalties for foreign carriers trucking in the U.S. without operating authority.

The proposal was added to the National Motor Carrier Administration bill at the request of the Teamsters union, which wants to keep Mexican trucks out of the U.S. It was also spurred by the release in June of a study by Kenneth M. Mead, DOT’s inspector general, which found Mexican trucks in 24 interior states and the four states that border Mexico (6-28, p. 1). The IG report identified the vehicles as belonging to 68 Mexican companies.



Some Mexican fleets operate legally in the U.S., as the National Transportation Safety Board learned last week.
