Connecticut will raise its taxes on diesel and gasoline July 1, the Hartford Courant reported Tuesday.
The state’s tax on diesel fuel will increase 7.7 cents, to 44.7 cents a gallon, the state’s tax department announced Monday, the paper reported.
The gas tax will rise three to four cents, depending on the wholesale price that day, the paper said, up from the existing 25-cent tax.
For diesel fuel, the tax department is required by law to calculate the tax that is based on the fuel’s average wholesale price for the April 1 to March 31 period each year, the Courant reported.
Because the average wholesale price during that period over the past year was $2.488 per gallon, the new tax rate per gallon will be 44.7 cents — up 7.7 cents from the current 37-cent diesel tax, the paper said.
That tax rate will remain at that level for one year and then will be adjusted up or down, the Courant reported.
