Cummins Westport Offers Natural Gas Engine for Medium Duty Trucks
Cummins Westport Inc. said its ISB6.7 G, a 6.7 liter midrange natural gas engine, now is available for medium-duty trucks and vocational applications, more than doubling the engine’s potential market.
It has been available for school bus applications since May 2016 from Thomas Built Buses, said the Vancouver-based company — a joint venture between engine maker Cummins Inc. and Westport Fuel Systems Inc.
Nitrogen oxide emissions of the ISB6.7 G are 0.1 grams per brake horsepower-hour — or 50% lower than the current Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board NOx limit of 0.2 g/bhp-hr. Carbon dioxide emissions meet the 2017 EPA greenhouse gas emission requirements. All CWI natural gas engines are lower than the 2010 EPA standard for particulate matter, 0.01 g/bhp-hr, the company said.
It is available in three ratings up to 240 horsepower and torque of 560 pound-feet. It has power take-off and automatic transmission capability. The base warranty is two years, with unlimited miles, the company said.
The California Energy Commission through its Public Interest Energy Research Program in conjunction with the Gas Technology Institute provided partial funding for developing the engine, Cummins Westport said.
