Defense Cut Transport Costs in 2000

The Department of Defense came in under budget on its transportation expenses in 2000, according to the general commanding the Military Traffic Management Command.

Kenneth L. Privratsky, the two-star general who runs MTMC in Alexandria, Va., said he returned $57.6 million — or about 6.6% — of his $877 million fiscal 2000 budget to his superiors.

That federal fiscal year ended Sept. 30. Privratsky made the announcement Nov. 21.

The two major areas of savings came in labor costs and contract negotiations, according to Johnnie Fisher, MTMC’s comptroller. At the end of fiscal 1999, the command had 2,414 civilian employees. One year later, he said that figure was down to 2,082 — a reduction of 332 people.
