Delhaize Group SA, parent of Food Lion and Bloom supermarkets, said it would close its distribution center in Clinton, Tenn.
Delhaize also said it will close 113 Food Lion stores, primarily in areas where the supermarket chain has the least store density. Delhaize will retire the Bloom name and convert 64 Bloom and Bottom Dollar Food outlets in Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia to Food Lion stores. It also will convert one Food Lion store in Florida to Harvey’s Supermarkets.
The Belgian company’s U.S. division, Delhaize America Inc., is ranked No. 47 on the Transport Topics 100 list of the largest private fleets in the U.S. and Canada.
Delhaize added it would shutter seven underperforming Bloom stores and six underperforming Bottom Dollar Food stores.
These actions will result in about 4,900 jobs lost, the company said.
