Diesel fuel fell 2.2 cents to $2.726 a gallon, the Department of Energy said Tuesday.

Diesel’s decrease marks the seventh consecutive drop. The average price has fallen 8.2 cents in the past seven weeks, following a 22.6-cent decline in the previous four weeks.

Despite the decline, diesel is 36 cents more than the same week last year, according to DOE records.

Gasoline, meanwhile, fell for the fifth time in seven weeks, DOE said following its weekly survey of filling stations, down a penny to $2.589. Gas is 93.6 cents above its price a year ago.

Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.

The survey was released Tuesday this week because DOE offices were closed Monday following a major snow storm in the Washington, D.C., area.
