The average price of diesel fell for the third time in the past four weeks, declining 4.4 cents to $4.648 a gallon, the Department of Energy said Monday.
Meanwhile, gasoline dipped 0.3 cent from a record high, to $4.079 a gallon, DOE said following its weekly survey of filling stations.
Diesel fell 1.6 cents three weeks ago from a record $4.723, then dipped 1.5 cents the following week, before holding steady last week at $4.692 a gallon.
The decrease left the price $1.813 higher than the same week a year ago.
The price fell in all five national regions, led by a 5.4-cent decline on the Gulf Coast, to $4.602.
It fell 4.7 cents in California, which DOE breaks out separately from the regions, to $4.922, the highest overall price.
Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
