Diesel Price Drops 5.6¢ to $3.659 a Gallon

Shift Comes on the Heels of Last Week's 11.3¢ Increase

The national average diesel price reversed course and dropped 5.6 cents to $3.659, according to U.S. Energy Information Administration data released Jan. 27.

The current price comes just one week after an 11.3-cent spike, the largest gain in nearly 1½ years. A 13.9-cent surge the week of Aug. 14, 2023, put the price of a gallon of diesel at $4.378.

This week's price also is 9.8 cents more than it was in the first reporting period of 2025 and 20.8 cents less than at this time in 2024.

Regional Trends

The Gulf Coast, at 7.7 cents a gallon, saw the second-biggest drop of the week after the Midwest (8 cents). Last week, the Gulf Coast’s 13.4-cent increase was the largest of the PADD regions. The only current increases came in the East Coast subregions of New England and Central Atlantic, each less than 2 cents a gallon.

Gasoline Update

The national average price for a gallon of gasoline dipped sixth-tenths of a cent to $3,103 a gallon. That's eight-tenths of a cent more than it was a year ago.
