Diesel and gasoline prices both jumped Monday, with diesel rising 7.5 cents to $2.625 a gallon and gas gaining 9 cents to $2.647, the Department of Energy said.
The diesel increase — the third straight and highest since late November — left trucking’s main fuel $1.728 below the same week last year following the all-time record $4.764 a gallon set on July 14, 2008.
It was the third straight increase for both fuels following four weeks of declines, DOE records showed.
The diesel jump was the biggest since a 14.6-cent gain on June 8, which came in the midst of a seven-week run of increases.
Gasoline’s increase was the biggest since it rose a dime on June 8, in the middle of an 11-week run of upturns. Gas set an all-time record $4.114 on July 7, 2008.
Diesel fell 12.2 cents in the four weeks prior to its 12.9-cent increase in the past three weeks.
Gasoline has now risen 18.4 cents in the past three weeks, following a 22.8-cent drop in the previous four weeks.
Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
