The Department of Transportation’s freight transportation services index fell 6% in February from a year earlier, its lowest level for the month of February in six years, DOT said Wednesday.
The index gained 2% from January to a reading of 104.8, DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics said in its monthly report.
In the five years since January 2004, the index has dropped 3.5%, marking only the second decline in a five-year period since records began in 1990.
Other than this January’s low reading of 102.7, the freight index has not been this low since September 2003, when it was 104.4.
The TSI is a seasonally adjusted monthly index measuring the output of services provided by the for-hire transportation industries, including railroad, air, truck, inland waterways, pipeline and local transit.
