The Department of Transportation’s freight transportation services index rose 4.1% in June from a year ago, the fourth straight year-over-year increase.
But with a reading of 97.9, the index remains below the level of every other June since 1997, when it was 92.4, DOT said Wednesday.
The freight TSI, which rose 0.2% from May, has fallen 11.8% in five years since June 2005 and is down 2.3% from June 2000.
Its 2.6% gain in March was the first year-to-year increase since July 2008.
The index is 13.3% below its historic peak of 112.9 set in May 2006, and up 4.7% from the recent low of 93.5, set in May 2009.
The TSI, which uses 2000 as its base year, is a seasonally adjusted monthly index measuring the output of services provided by the for-hire transportation industries, including railroad, air, truck, inland waterways, pipeline and local transit.
