DOT Freight Transportation Index Rises 2.8% in June
The Department of Transportation’s freight transportation services index rose 2.8% in June from the same month last year, DOT said Aug. 13.
The freight TSI declined 0.9% from May’s record high to a reading of 119.1, DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics said in its monthly report. DOT uses a baseline reading of 100 from the year 2000.
Each freight mode declined in June on a drop in construction spending which is often a driver of transportation shipments, BTS said.
Freight shipments are up 24.1% up since the end of the recession in 2009 and have increased 7.5% since 2004.
The freight TSI is a seasonally adjusted monthly index measuring the output of services provided by the for-hire transportation industries, including railroad, air, truck, inland waterways, pipeline and local transit.
