The Department of Transportation’s freight transportation services index rose 3.2% in July from the same month last year, DOT announced on Sept. 10.
The freight TSI increased 0.9% from June, following a one-month decline, DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics said in its monthly report. DOT uses a baseline reading of 100 from the year 2000.
All freight modes grew except for water and pipelines, BTS said. Freight shipments in July are 0.5% below the all-time high level in May.
The May record was revised up slightly, and the January through April indexes were revised down slightly, according to BTS.
Year-to-date, freight shipments are up 0.4% compared to the same period last year.
The freight TSI is a seasonally adjusted monthly index measuring the output of services provided by the for-hire transportation industries, including railroad, air, truck, inland waterways, pipeline and local transit.
