The Department of Transportation’s freight transportation services index rose 4.2% in December from the same month in 2013, DOT said Feb. 11.

The freight TSI increase was little changed from November at a reading of 123.8, failing to rise after five consecutive months of increases, DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics said in its monthly report.

December’s reading was less than one-tenth of 1% below the all-time high of 123.9 set in November. DOT uses a baseline reading of 100 from the year 2000.

The reading in November was revised up from 123.2.

“Fourth-quarter 2014 represented the second consecutive quarter of rapid growth after stability in the first half of the year. The third and fourth quarters of 2014 were the first two consecutive quarters with growth above 1.5% since the first quarter of 2010,” DOT said in a statement.

The freight TSI is a seasonally adjusted monthly index measuring the output of services provided by the for-hire transportation industries, including railroad, air, truck, inland waterways, pipeline and local transit.
