DOT Misses Deadline for Hill's Truck Parking Study

Truck drivers who are unable to find a nighttime parking area to rest have to park on highway shoulders or access ramps, risking the possibility of being struck by other vehicles.

The Department of Transportation failed to meet the June 23 deadline for submitting a study to Congress on claims that long-haul truckers can’t find sufficient parking spaces to comply with federal safety regulations.

Federal Highway Administration officials told Transport Topics they were reviewing a draft, but had no comment on when it would be sent to Congress or why they didn’t meet the deadline.

In 1998, Congress directed FHWA to prepare an analysis of parking facilities at commercial truck stops and public rest areas, including a plan to reduce shortages where they exist.
