Dothan Warehouse in Alabama is investing $5.2 million to expand its temperature-controlled storage space to meet growing demand after selling its frozen facility to Vertical Cold Storage.
Gov. Kay Ivey noted in the recent announcement, “Dothan Warehouse’s expansion is a shining example of how Alabama businesses are stepping up to meet the demands of a changing marketplace. This investment in temperature-controlled storage not only strengthens Alabama’s logistics capabilities, but also adds quality jobs for our hardworking citizens in Dothan and beyond.”
The project will add 50 jobs to Dothan Warehouse’s Houston County facility with the extra 120,000 square feet of temperature-controlled storage space.
Dothan Warehouse forecasts it will ship 500,000 parcels from the location each month by the end of next year. It specializes in handling food, health/beauty products, and medical and nutraceutical items.
Jones
“We have been focused, monitoring market conditions and determined there is more demand for temperature-controlled fulfillment space, and we are very excited to continue to grow,” said Dothan Warehouse President Turner Jones.
The new space will provide Dothan Warehouse with 10,000 pallet positions of capacity and offer new co-packing capabilities.
Some 40,000 square feet of new space will be designated for holding items that must be chilled at 35 degrees, while the remaining added 80,000 square feet of storage space will be kept at 63 degrees.
According to the expansion announcement, Dothan Warehouse’s capabilities when the project is completed will align with the British Retail Consortium Food Safety Global Standard, a global standard for food safety, quality and traceability.
Dothan Warehouse is located in southeast Alabama with easy access to the Port of Mobile as well as the Port of Savannah in Georgia, the Port of New Orleans, and Florida’s Jaxport and Port Panama City.
McNair
“This project’s focus on food safety and temperature-controlled logistics positions Alabama as a leader in the sector, and we’re proud to support initiatives that bring new jobs and investment into our communities,” said Ellen McNair, state secretary of commerce. “Through partnerships and programs aimed at fostering growth, we’re enabling companies like Dothan Warehouse to innovate, expand and thrive.”
The project also received assistance from the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce’s public/private partnership Grow Dothan, the City of Dothan’s Industrial Development Board, Dothan Utilities, state legislators and the Alabama Municipal Electric Authority.

In August, Dothan Warehouse said it would sell its frozen storage facilities to Vertical Cold Storage. The sale gave Vertical Cold Storage a 109,000-square-foot facility, with 10 dock doors, that is able to handle frozen foods. The facility contained high-capacity blast freezing, export services, case picking, cross docking and kitting capabilities.
At that time, Vertical Cold Storage CEO West Hutchison noted, “This latest acquisition shows our commitment to the protein industry and to building a nationwide network of high-performance frozen and refrigerated warehouses. We look forward to supporting the many great processors and retailers in the region, and to welcoming the Dothan team members on board.”
In the announcement of the sale, Vertical Cold Storage said the acquisition didn’t include Dothan Warehouse’s ambient and refrigerated facilities.
