Durable goods orders fell in March while orders excluding transportation equipment rose, the Commerce Department said Friday.
The 1.3% decrease followed a revised 1.1% increase in February that was higher than first reported.
Excluding transportation equipment orders, which tend to be volatile, orders rose 2.8%, the largest increase since December 2007..
The drop was lead by a 67% decrease in demand for commercial aircraft.
Economists had forecast orders to increase 0.2%, while orders excluding transportation were forecast to gain 0.7%, Bloomberg reported.
Durable goods include large items such as refrigerators and air conditioners. Trucking is a major beneficiary of durable goods manufacturing, hauling both components and finished goods.
