The Environmental Protection Agency said Friday that greenhouse gases could pose a danger to the public health, paving the way for new regulation of vehicles, power plants and factories, Bloomberg reported.

The proposed finding marks the first formal action by the federal government toward restricting carbon dioxide emissions that scientists say contribute to global warming.

“This finding confirms that greenhouse gas pollution is a serious problem now and for future generations,” EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson said in a statement.

The decision may spur regulation of General Motors Corp. and other automakers, as well as utilities and manufacturers, Bloomberg said.

Draft legislation is set to be next week by a subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee would “supersede” EPA regulation, said Henry Waxman, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Bloomberg reported.

The measure would require industrial polluters to get permits for emissions, which then could be bought and sold on a market.
