FHWA Announces $60 Million Grant Program for High-Tech Innovations

Federal Highway Administration officials on March 23 announced they are accepting proposals for $60 million in grants to fund high-tech transportation innovations that will improve safety, efficiency, system performance and infrastructure return on investment.

The Advanced Transportation and Congestion Management Technologies Deployment Program is designed to fund technological solutions to issues including congestion, reducing the number and severity of crashes, speeding up the deployment of autonomous vehicles and reducing transportation-related emissions.

“This program will take technological innovation to a new level and help to make the entire transportation network more reliable for commuters, businesses and freight shippers,” Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said. “An efficient transportation system is the foundation of a strong economy.”

The grant program was established under the FAST Act signed into law in December. Applications for funding will be accepted through June 3, FHWA said.

State departments of transportation, local governments, transit agencies and metropolitan planning organizations are among the entities invited to apply.

“This new program will help harness and support these technologies and push the boundaries of what is possible for the future of transportation in our country,” Federal Highway Administrator Gregory Nadeau said.
