FMCSA Considers Mexican Carrier for Cross-Border Program

The Federal Motor Carrier Administration is considering certification of the 15th carrier under the cross-border pilot program that allows Mexican trucking companies to run longhaul trips in the United States.

FMCSA posted a notice Nov. 12 in the Federal Register that it planned to announce a safety audit and will be seeking comment on Road Machinery Co., which has one truck and one driver.

The pilot program, which began in 2011, is supposed to run for three years. FMCSA said that when the pilot began the agency would need 46 carriers to issue a sound safety judgment on whether Mexican carriers should be allowed to operate in the U.S.

The agency also said that it was aiming for 4,100 roadside inspections that would form the basis of its safety analysis.

As of Oct. 27, there have been 3,995 inspections. However, 3,402 of those have been done on just two carriers: Servicio de Transportes Internacional y Local and GCC Transporte SA de CV.
