FMCSA Warns Carriers of Fraudulent Letters

The letters, dated Sept. 24, claim to be from the U.S. Department of Transportation and are signed by “Julie Weynel,” the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration said in a Sept. 27 warning to carriers.

“Motor carrier officials and their employees, as well as government and law enforcement officials, should be vigilant and on the lookout for fraudulent attempts to gather financial . . . data by fax, e-mail or telephone,” FMCSA said, warning companies to verify information about who is requesting the data before sending anything.

Similar fraudulent letters have been sent to carriers since at least 2005, DOT said.
