DHL's disaster response team unloads supplies (DHL)
Freight haulers are pledging aid, both cash and logistics help, to relief efforts in the Philippines, parts of which were devastated by a massive typhoon Nov. 8 that has left at least 4,460 dead and 660,000 homeless.
UPS pledged $1 million in what it said was a combination of “cash grants, in-kind transportation movements and technical expertise to provide urgent relief as well as strategic support for the long-term needs.”
Norfolk Southern said it was sending a $50,000 donation to the American Red Cross.
Deutsche Post DHL announced it was sending members of its disaster response team to the island nation to help with on-the-ground airport logistics by setting up a warehouse to help sort and transport relief goods.
The team will operate at the regional Mactan Cebu Airport on Cebu Island near Leyte Island, the one most severely damaged by the typhoon.
