Freightliner, Navistar Plan Deep Cuts in Work Force

More than 5,000 employees of Freightliner Corp. and Navistar International will soon be out of a job because of declining orders for new trucks.

Freightliner, based in Portland, Ore., announced Aug. 14 that it would fire 3,745 factory workers — almost one in five of its work force.

In Chicago the next day, Navistar said it would let 1,600 employees go.

The addition of these layoffs will bring the number of jobs lost in truck manufacturing this year to more than 7,800.
