A Georgia city is going to add fuel surcharges to the speeding tickets of drivers, USA Today reported Wednesday.
Drivers caught speeding in Holly Springs, Ga., an Atlanta suburb, will have to pay an extra $12 on their tickets to cover the high fuel prices paid by the police department, the paper reported on its Web site.
Atlanta is considering a similar measure, Fox television affiliate WAGA reported on its Web site, but the National League of Cities said it was unaware of other cities adding such fees, USA Today said.
The Holly Springs City Council approved the fee, which will be effective July 1, to offset fuel prices that have taken up nearly 60% of the department’s 2008 fuel budget, the paper reported.
The fee increase, which applies to all moving violations, could can be rescinded if gas prices fall below $3 a gallon, the paper said, citing city officials.
