GE Transportation to Buy Software Provider RMI

GE Transportation said it will acquire transportation software provider RMI from New York private equity firm Carlyle Group for an undisclosed sum.

The subsidiary of General Electric Co. did not disclose any purchase terms in its announcement. The transaction is expected to close in early 2012.

RMI generates about $45 million in annual revenue. It makes software that aids rail shipments and railroad operations, according to GE Transportation spokesman Stephan Koller.

The company offers railcar maintenance, car hire and revenue accounting software used by railroads, rail shippers and railcar lessors, Koller said.

But RMI also produces Oasis, a module that processes inbound trailers and containers and delivers container and trailer load planning for outbound shipments at intermodal terminals, said RMI spokeswoman Jane Edgar. Oasis is used at three Class 1 intermodal rail terminals that use electric wide-span rail-mounted gantry cranes, she said.

“RMI’s software offerings complement GE Transportation’s rail portfolio,” GE Transportation president Lorenzo Simonelli said in a statement. He added that the acquisition is strategic for his company and offers a platform for expanding GE Transportation’s software and services.
