VALDOSTA, Ga. — A South Georgia driver will represent Georgia in the National Truck Driving Championships in August.

Glenn Moore of Valdosta, a driver for FedEx Freight, competes in the tanker class and has competed at the state level 11 times, according to organizers. This will be his second trip to nationals.

FedEx ranks No. 2 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.

The state competition, which Moore won May 13, is divided into three categories: a written test, a pre-trip inspection and a skills competition.

To qualify to compete, Moore had to be accident-free for one year.

“It's all about safety,” Moore said of the competition. “It's an incentive to go accident free for a year. You have to always be conscious of it.”

He began training in January for the competition. The written exam covers knowledge of industry rules while the pre-trip is a hands-on portion that involves finding faults on trailers.

The skills competition is an obstacle course with six different obstacles drivers must maneuver safely around.

At the Nationals, hosted in Orlando, Fla., Aug. 8-12, Moore will compete against 49 other drivers representing their respective states.

No matter the outcome of nationals, Moore said he plans to continue practicing safe driving.

“It gives me a chance to promote safety within the company and showcase my talents,” Moore said. “If I could stop one accident from happening, it'd all be worth it.”
