Green Truck Stop Set in Virginia

A new truck stop opened on U.S. 220 that conducts a “farm-to-fuel” operation by using canola seed to make biodiesel, the Associated Press reported.

Red Birch Energy, in Henry County, Va., said it contracts with farmers to grow canola on idle fields during winter, and the meal byproduct produced when the seed is crushed to extract seed oil is used as a farm animal feed supplement, AP reported.

The oil extracted is refined and blended into biodiesel and sold at the company’s pump, which is north of Martinsville, Va., AP said.
