A Virginia Tech researcher said a group studying freight movement on Interstate 81 may create an electronic system to help direct truck drivers to available parking spaces, the Associated Press reported.

A committee of the I-81 Corridor Coalition announced the project Monday in Hagerstown, Md.

Ray Pethtel, a transportation fellow at Virginia Tech, said there are more than 5,200 truck parking spaces along the six-state, 855-mile I-81 corridor, but added that many trucks park overnight on ramps and road shoulders, AP reported.

He said the group is seeking funding to develop a system that could use wireless technology to tell drivers where parking is available and what amenities exist at that location, AP reported.

Separately, Virginia said recently it is studying ways to open more areas to truck parking, a moved hailed by the Virginia Trucking Association and American Trucking Associations. (Click here for previous story.)
