Groups Pushing for Larger Trucks to Merge

Two groups pushing for liberalization of federal truck size and weight limits - the Coalition for Transportation Productivity and Americans for Safe and Efficient Transportation  announced Monday that they will merge into one, larger organization.

The new group, which will operate under the Coalition for Transportation Productivity name, will have about 200 combined members once the 40 members of ASET join CTP's 160 members.

“Our united effort, combined with strong bipartisan support in the House and Senate, positions [Safe and Efficient Transportation Act] to finally move forward in the next Congress,” said Walter Bay, chairman of ASET and president and CEO of Tandem Transport.

The two groups have been lobbying in favor of the bill - introduced in both the House and Senate that would allow for states to increase their weight limits on interstate highways to 97,000 pounds if they added axles to diffuse the weight.

The expanded group will continued to be led by John Runyan, CTP's executive director.
