Secretary of Transportation Rodney E. Slater officially tapped Hart to run trucking agency on the eve of the first of seven public hearings on FMCSA's controversial hours-of-service proposal. The first hearing, a two-day schedule, will be held at the Department of Transportaiton in Washington May 31 and June 1.

Hart, who has been the maritime administrator, will return to that office after his 90-day stay at FMCSA.

Hart will have the opportunity to monitor the hours-of-service debate closely. The House review of the $55 billion department budget for fiscal year 20001 has already been accomplished without a hitch, leaving him with a singular but broad focus.
