Heartland Express said Tuesday its first-quarter profit fell 35% to $14.7 million, or 15 cents a share, from $22.6 million, or 23 cents, last year.

Revenue rose 4% to $149 million, the truckload carrier said.

The earnings downturn was due to soaring fuel costs and asset sales in the comparable year-ago period, the company said in a statement.

Heartland Express is ranked No. 45 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire trucking companies.
