House appropriators on May 18 will take up a fiscal 2017 funding bill that is expected to include trucking-related provisions, Capitol Hill aides said.

The text of the bill has yet to be unveiled. People familiar with the legislation told Transport Topics the bill would aim to boost truck safety programs.

The Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.) and full committee Chairman Hal Rogers (R-Ky.) indicated this year they will look to advance funding measures that align with GOP priorities.

“They will be fiscally responsible, reflecting the needs of our federal government and the American people while protecting our financial future," Rogers said.

In February, the Obama administration proposed a fiscal 2017 funding request that would rely on oil companies paying a $10.25-per-barrel fee as a way to fund transportation projects. Overall, the administration is requesting $640 million for motor carrier safety and consumer enforcement efforts at the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

The hearing is at 11:30 a.m. EDT.
