House Transportation Leaders Call for Investigation Into EPA

Rep. Peter DeFazio, chairman of the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, recently called on the Inspector General of the National Archives and Records Administration to investigate reports regarding the alleged destruction of certain records at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee Chairwoman Grace Napolitano (D-Calif.) joined the chairman’s call to the IG. The lawmakers pointed to records pertaining to the Kansas water quality standards rulemaking.
“A NARA OIG investigation is necessary to inform the public and Congress about any EPA record-keeping violations that have been allowed to persist as well as any agency deceit in its communications with the archivist. Further, an investigation will reveal if these were isolated incidents or a broader pattern under the Trump administration,” DeFazio (D-Ore.) and Napolitano indicated in a letter to James Springs, Inspector General at the National Archives and Records Administration, on Sept. 8.

The lawmakers also said, “A comprehensive investigation into EPA’s destruction of documents will advance the NARA OIG mission to report waste, fraud, abuse and mismanagement, and should also produce recommendations that include corrective actions to guard against future improper document destruction.”
