Illinois CDL Problems Prompt Image Campaign

Illinois trucking interests, weary of a commercial driver licensing scandal that has dragged on for more than 18 months, launched an image program that attempts to show the public that the vast majority of truckers did not need to resort to bribery to get their CDLs.

Under a public campaign announced May 9 by the Illinois Transportation Association, carriers that enroll in PrePass and make it through the electronic weigh-station bypass system’s safety background check will be able to purchase truck decals that declare they are “Driven by Safety.”

“We’re trying to take a proactive approach about raising public confidence in the trucking industry, given all the negative press about the CDLs we’ve had in the past year,” said Fred Serpe, ITA’s executive director.
