India’s Tata Motors Unveils New Truck Line

Seeks to Compete With Global OEMs

India’s Tata Motors said it is unveiling a new line of trucks to be called the “world truck,” the New York Times reported Thursday.

It will produce the vehicles in India and South Korea, where it owns the Tata Daewoo Commercial Vehicle Co., the Times reported on its Web site

Analysts say Tata was revamping its truck lineup to compete with global truck manufacturers such as Sweden’s Volvo AB and Germany’s Daimler AG, which recently started selling trucks in India, and local competitors, the Times reported.

The company’s new trucks will have cargo capacity that range from 10 to 75 tons, several times greater than the biggest trucks it currently produces, the Times said.

Tata expects to export about half of the trucks it produces, primarily to markets such as South Africa, the Middle East and South Asia, the Times reported.
