Intermodal rail traffic rose last week but at a slower pace than recent weeks, the Association of American Railroads said Thursday.
Intermodal volume grew 12.7% to 215,118 units from 190,880 last year, AAR said in its weekly report Thursday.
Containers rose 14.4% to 182,459 units, while trailers gained 3.9% to 32,659 units for the week ended Saturday.
Freight rail traffic, which excludes intermodal traffic, rose 10.6% to 288,114 carloads, AAR said.
Railroad volume is considered an important economic indicator. Intermodal traffic, which tends to be higher-valued merchandise than bulk commodities, uses trains for the long haul and trucks for the shorter distance at either end of the trip.
