Intermodal rail traffic jumped 36.6% last week compared with a year ago, the Association of American Railroads said Thursday.
Traffic totaled 231,286 trailers and containers for the week ended Saturday, AAR said in its weekly report.
Containers rose 39.8% to 197,134 units, while trailers gained 20.9% to 34,152 units.
The intermodal level was 18.8% higher than the same week in 2008, though both prior years included the July 4 holiday.
Freight rail traffic, which excludes intermodal traffic, rose 18.8% to 286,777 carloads, th3e group said.
