LAS VEGAS — Navistar Inc. premiered a new, integrated powertrain as part of an update for its International LT Series truck line Aug. 16.
The S13 Integrated Powertrain, which Navistar developed in collaboration with its parent company Traton Group, consists of three distinct components — an engine, a transmission and an aftertreatment system. Company executives said the setup delivers a fuel efficiency gain of up to 15% compared with its first-generation A26 engine.
“It’s not only the most efficient powertrain we’ve ever produced,” said Göran Nyberg, executive vice president, commercial operations for International, “but it’s also a milestone on our journey to the ultimate goal of zero emissions.”
Nyberg noted that the powertrain was the culmination of a five-year, clean sheet development process with the engine, transmission and aftertreatment system developed and integrated concurrently. Executives touted the system’s light weight, while also stressing its toughness.

“To ensure superior performance and reliability of the S13 Integrated Powertrain, it’s been designed to meet the toughest requirements of the North American market,” said Michael Grahe, executive vice president, operations. “Before this integrated powertrain goes into serial production, this product will have logged more than 4 million miles of field testing on North American roads. We are testing on all terrains —from the desert of Arizona to the frozen tundra of Alaska.”
The updated powertrain is among the several features from an updated aerodynamic package on the LT Series, tailored to linehaul applications. This aero package includes closeouts for diesel exhaust fluid and fuel filters, steer wheel closeouts, a modified lower skirt trim and new roof extender.

“The new International LT Series updates will deliver superior operating economy and optimal value to our customers,” said Chet Ciesielski, vice president, On-Highway Heavy Duty Truck Business. “We ensure the customer is top-of-mind for any product updates we make. We rely on their input and real-world feedback to optimize the design of our products. This latest LT Series update is a proof point of listening to our customers, ensuring they can maximize their fleet vehicles’ efficiency and performance.”

International leaders noted that the updated series is a part of its initiative to achieve 50% zero-emission vehicle sales by 2030, and 100% by 2040.
Company leaders noted that the S13 Integrated Powertrain is slated to be online by fall of 2023. It will be manufactured at Navistar’s Huntsville Powertrain Manufacturing Plant in Huntsville, Ala. The launch event was held at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
