Iowa DOT Director Paul Trombino Unexpectedly Resigns

Trombino

Paul Trombino, the director of Iowa’s Department of Transportation and president of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, surprisingly submitted his resignation to Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad on Nov. 9.

“The Iowa DOT received notice yesterday that Paul is leaving,” department spokeswoman Andrea Henry wrote in an e-mail to Transport Topics. “He is extremely respected as an innovative leader for the department, and his contributions have had a positive impact, not only for the state of Iowa but for the nation. He confirmed that he is leaving to pursue other opportunities outside of state government.

"He has been great to work with and … his presence will be greatly missed. We are sorry to see him go!”

Trombino’s resignation is effective Nov. 29. Branstad has yet to name an interim replacement.

“We always appreciated the leadership Paul provided on a variety of issues," said Brenda Neville, president of the Iowa Motor Truck Association. "He was instrumental in getting the Iowa gas tax passed a few years ago and was always looking for opportunities to provide cutting-edge solutions and approaches to maximize the efficiency of freight movement in Iowa.

"We also appreciated Paul’s willingness to sit down and discuss issues and ideas with the trucking industry. He was always looking for ways to create efficiencies while also keeping a focus on safety. We wish him the best in his future endeavors and thank him for the great work, leadership and dedication he shared with the people of Iowa and the trucking industry as the Iowa DOT Director.”

AASHTO spokesman Tony Dorsey was unaware of Trombino’s plans.
