Jobless Claims Rise for Week

Initial jobless claims rose last week but stayed below their late June level, the Labor Department said Thursday.

Claims for the week ended Saturday rose by 25,000 to 584,000, Labor said. Each week in June, more than 600,000 claims were filed.

The four-week moving average, a less volatile measure,  to 559,000, from 567,250 a week earlier, Labor said.

The number of Americans collecting jobless benefits fell by 54,000, to 6.197 million, the lowest level since April.
