Kansas City Southern’s 1Q Profit Rises

Kansas City Southern said it earned $32.6 million, or 34 cents a share, in its first quarter, compared with a loss of $8.1 million, or 9 cents, the previous year.

The railroad’s revenue jumped 26% to $436.3 million from $346 million a year ago, it said Tuesday.

Volumes increased 15%. Year-over-year, carloads rose in every freight segment except coal.

Kansas City Southern officials attributed the volume gains to an upturn in manufacturing, Reuters reported.
