Ron Konezny, a co-founder of PeopleNet and an executive at its parent company, Trimble Navigation Ltd., is leaving the firm later this month to become CEO of Digi International Inc.

Konezny became vice president of Trimble’s global transportation and logistics business after it purchased PeopleNet, a provider of onboard computers, in 2011.

Since then, he has guided the division as it has rapidly expanded in the North American trucking technology market through other major acquisitions, including TMW Systems and ALK Technologies.

Digi credited Konezny, 46, with achieving an “outstanding track record of consistent, profitable revenue growth” at Trimble’s transportation and logistics division, which has nearly 1,500 employees and more than 2 million remotely managed assets.

Konezny will succeed Joseph Dunsmore, who is retiring, as Digi’s CEO on Dec. 17.

Digi is a supplier of wireless technology to a variety of industries. The company is based in Minnetonka, Minnesota, which is also home to PeopleNet’s headquarters.

“I am excited to join the Digi team and lead the company forward in the wireless [machine-to-machine] and Internet of Things marketplace,” Konezny said in Digi’s announcement.

Trimble said joining Digi was a “great opportunity” for Konezny and his family.

Jim Veneziano has assumed Konezny’s role and responsibilities at Trimble, the company said.

Veneziano is vice president of Trimble’s Mobile Solutions segment, which includes the transportation and logistics division. He has been with Trimble since 1990 and has held a variety of executive-level management roles at the company.

“As the founder and past president of PeopleNet and vice president of Trimble’s Transportation and Logistics Division for the last three years, Ron was instrumental in building the PeopleNet and Trimble organizations as leaders in fleet mobility technology for the land transportation industry,” Veneziano said in a statement. “On behalf of Trimble, we wish Ron success in his new role.”
