L.A. Port Proposes Timeline for Driver Mandate

The Port of Los Angeles wants to start implementing its employee driver mandate next year, with a full requirement in place by the end of 2013.

Under the proposed schedule, 20% of trips to the port will be by employee drivers by Dec. 31, 2011, the port said Friday. A year later, 66% would be by employees, and all trips would be by employees by Dec. 31, 2013.

Port staff will present the proposal to the Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners for approval Sept. 27, the port said.

The release of the proposed schedule came a day after American Trucking Associations filed a notice with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, saying it will appeal a lower court's ruling that the driver mandate is legal (click here for previous story).
