Landstar System recently announced the recipients of its overall customer of the year and safety officer of the year awards for 2020. The carrier also recognized two individuals for their performance.
The 2020 Landstar M.U.S.T. Customer of the Year award went to Southwire Co. in Carrollton, Ga. The 2020 Landstar Safety Officer of the Year went to Let’s Move It managing partner Mohammad Chatila.
“Together, Landstar and Southwire Co. reviewed carrier safety and securement procedures at the facility to support our mutual commitment to a safety-first culture,” Mike Cobb, vice president of safety and compliance at Landstar, said in a statement.
The Mutual Understanding of Safety Together (M.U.S.T.) program involves an extensive review of a customer’s facility, followed by a discussion and analysis of safety and securement practices.
Chatila serves as the designated Landstar Safety Officer at the independent agency owned by Yossef Chatila, in St. Augustine, Fla. He was selected for his support of the Landstar safety culture. Let’s Move It did not experience a single preventable accident in 2020.
“Mo promotes safety at the agency by always communicating about safety and security procedures with carriers and customers. The agency promotes Landstar’s Complete and Accurate Dispatch process and supports customers with Landstar safety initiatives,” Cobb said. “Safety officers with dedication like Mo are key to Landstar’s safety-first culture.”
Landstar also named Lance Cole as its 2020 Rookie of the Year and presented Matt Miller with its Outstanding Management Achievement Award, the company announced June 2.
Cole has been an agent for the asset-light provider of integrated transportation management solutions since February 2020. Miller has served as the transportation logistics vice president of trailer management since 2015.
“Lance’s entrepreneurial spirit, experience, professionalism and determination as a new independent Landstar agent earned him the 2020 Rookie of the Year Award,” Gattoni said in a statement. “In less than a year, Lance’s freight agency has demonstrated outstanding growth, revenue performance and customer service excellence.”
Landstar defines a rookie as an independent agent who is new to its network, but not necessarily new to the transportation industry. Cole started his career in transportation logistics more than two decades ago as a sales and operations professional at an independent trucking company in Oklahoma.

“Matt Miller has played a critical role in developing the digital framework to enhance and automate company-controlled trailer assignment, utilization, tracking and maintenance processes,” Gattoni said. “At the beginning of Matt’s tenure, many of the trailer processes were manual. As the Landstar trailer count continued to grow, he proactively identified opportunities to build efficiencies to manage the growing fleet.”
Miller has led the effort to increase the company trailer fleet from 9,800 to more than 13,000 company- controlled trailers since 2015. Under his direction and leadership, the trailer request process was digitized and includes a trailer yard management system.
Miller and his staff also launched a trailer pool management system to provide timely and accurate information on trailer locations and specifications.
Landstar ranks No. 9 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest for-hire carriers in North America and No. 22 on the TT Top 50 list of the largest logistics companies.
