Landstar Works to Undo Rating

A spokeswoman for Landstar System said last week the Jacksonville, Fla.-based company is working “feverishly” to resolve problems that led the Department of Transportation to propose an unsatisfactory safety fitness rating for one of its subsidiaries, Landstar Ligon.

The rating surprised many industry analysts and may have tarnished Landstar’s self-made reputation as a company where “safety is first” ("Landstar Unit Gets Low Safety Grade," 11-29, p. 2).

Though neither government officials nor company executives would discuss the reason for Ligon’s unsatisfactory rating, one influential analyst said he thinks Landstar’s Ligon division was cited for “falsification of driver log books.”
