Light, Medium Truck Makers Go North

MONTREAL – Japanese truck makers with established markets in the United States are heading north of the border to battle for sales of urban delivery trucks in Canada.

Mitsubishi Fuso Truck of America and an alliance between Isuzu Motors Ltd. and General Motors Corp. each introduced medium-duty trucks in Canada at Expocam ’99, a Canadian truck show here in October.

Both Mitsubishi and GM will focus on sales in the "Golden Horseshoe," an area surrounding Toronto, and other large urban markets in Canada.

The companies will ship trucks currently sold in the United States to American ports. They will make modifications, such as adding French language and metric readings on dashboard instruments, before sending them to Canadian dealers.
