Lion Electric Introduces New Medium-Duty Truck

ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Lion Electric Co., a manufacturer of all-electric commercial vehicles, announced the launch of its battery-electric Lion5 medium-duty truck at the 2023 Advanced Clean Transportation Expo.
The cabover model, slated to enter production before the end of this year, offers a driving range of up to 200 miles and a maximum payload of 12,500 pounds.
The Lion5, designed for last-mile delivery and other applications, will be available in Class 5 and 6 configurations and can be charged to 80% in 1.5 hours, the company said.
“This Lion5 truck is a perfect example of what we call a purpose-built electric truck,” Lion CEO and founder Marc Bédard said May 3 during the truck’s unveiling at ACT Expo. “It’s designed from the ground up to be a great electric truck and to be easily integrated into truck fleets for last-mile and also middle-mile delivery and many other usages as the operators see fit.”

The vehicle is powered by Lion’s new in-house engineered and manufactured LionBattery packs. This proprietary 800-volt battery system, first installed on the Lion5, includes a battery management system, a battery thermal management system and battery modules and packs.
A cutaway configuration option enables passthrough between the cab and body upfit.

Body builders can access 4 kilowatts of low voltage and up to 32 kilowatts of high voltage through an optional electric power take-off interface.
Lion Electric, based in Saint-Jérôme, Quebec, also offers several other battery-electric truck and bus models.
The company provides a range of support services for fleets interested in deploying its electric vehicles. That support includes charging infrastructure, proprietary EV telematics, financing assistance, driver and technician training and assistance applying for grants and funding.
“Not only are our vehicles custom made for electric, but the whole business model is made for electric,” Bédard said.
